Point of View persuasive essay help Statistics essay help

Point of view is a very important element of literature. In the book Literature Reading, Reacting, Writing point of view is described as, “the vantage point from which events are presented” (Kirszner and Mandell 300). The point of view of a story is simply the view of whoever’s telling it. Kirszner and Mandell inform readers that if the narrator can enter all the characters’ minds and always knows what is going on, then he is omniscient (303). Kirszner and Mandell also tell readers that if a narrator can only enter one character’s mind, then he is a limited omniscient narrator (304).

Point of view plays an important role in the effectiveness of a story. By analyzing John Updike’s “A&P” one can observe how point of view is used to develop characters and theme. The development of characters is very closely tied to point of view. In the case of “A&P,” Sammy is a major first person unreliable narrator. The story seems to be about an emerging counterculture revolution. Sammy appears to be in the middle of this revolution. The three girls signify the emerging counterculture and the manager signifies the current culture at the time of the 1960’s.

If the manager was telling the story, then readers would’ve gotten a more negative view of the girls. The girls would’ve given readers an equally negative view of the manager. Sammy, on the other hand, judged everyone. His juvenile mind was also subject to less biasness since he was too naive to try and sugarcoat any of his descriptive thoughts. If someone was fat he said it. If someone was old he said it. This helped speed up the development of other characters, which is essential in a short story.

Throughout the story, readers get an insight into Sammy’s thoughts which helps them understand and empathize with Sammy’s character. It becomes apparent he is a person who hates his job and desperately desires the attention of females. He also pays attention to detail like any good narrator should. Point of view also affects the development of the theme of the story. The manager is an older fellow so he sees the girls’ attire as completely immoral. He rants, “We want you decently dressed when you come in here” (Updike 227).

However, the definition of decency changes overtime. Sammy cannot tell readers what it is, but he could give readers his opinion of how the girls were treated. He feels they were treated unjustly. The theme of the story is pretty simple, nothing is set in stone. Readers get to see this theme outlined when the girls walk in the store dressed against the norm. Additionally, neither the reader nor the manager expected Sammy to quit his job. His job was important considering the time era.

However, times do change. Everyone has a point in which they get fed up. These girls appear to be reminiscent of the hippie subculture. All the sexual overtone in Sammy’s thoughts are also reminiscent of the hippie culture. Overall, the story was better told by Sammy because he offered us the perspective of someone in the middle. Sammy’s perspective, while subjective in thought, was generally examining instead of asserting. John Updike’s “A&P” was heavily affected by the element of point of view.

Sammy’s view not only helped define other characters, but it helped define the theme as well. The fact that the narrator was not third person helped maintain the focus of the story. The story greatly benefitted from having a first person narrator. This is because the character of Sammy offered readers some middle ground. Readers weren’t able to take sides immediately. Instead, they were kind of like Sammy, observant. Sammy offered readers both the distance needed to recognize the theme and the intimacy needed to understand the characters.

HOW TO START A PERSUASIVE ESSAY

Do students face a big problem with the writing of a persuasive essay? Don’t know how to start a persuasive essay? Here is a solution!

The answer is simple – with introductory paragraph. How to write it? This is a widespread problem for both high school and college students around world.

Ideal essay introduction corresponds to three criteria: it should be topic-allied, logical and concise.

WHAT DOES TOPIC-ALLIED MEAN?

This is a clear paraphrase of the topic combining with a short answer to all parts of the assignment. In introduction persuasive work, there is no extra information: if an opinion is asked in assignment, it is briefly mentioned. If the task is asked for causes, they are noticed in the introduction. It cannot be broad or concrete. If the topic asks for British retirees, you cannot speak about Europeans or Russians. If you are asked about adolescents, you cannot write about middle school children.

WHAT DOES A LOGICAL INTRODUCTION MEAN?

It defines position you will prove (do not confuse with thinking), which will be traced further within entire paper with a thesis statement. The beginning should be linked to all other body paragraphs. If you have an argumentative essay on the causes and decisions, you mention a reason, the work loses its logic.

WHAT DOES CONCISE INTRODUCTION MEAN?

This is brief (2-3 sentences) beginning. It must be concise if you have more space for arguments and examples in rest essay. When paragraph is long, you do not have space and time to state your thesis, points argument and develop ideas, which makes them look general, not understood.

The introductory paragraph should catch reader’s interest. Here are some tips you can safely use for writing persuasive essays to make them more intriguing.

  • Contact reader directly, ask a rhetorical question.
  • Start with a quote, aphorism that best suits topic of your work.
  • Refer to any outstanding situation, a scene, an interesting fact, but they should be related to underlying concept of the whole paper.

How to Write a GREAT Persuasive Essay: Writing Tips & Strategies

Allison Bressmer

Most composition classes you’ll take will teach the art of persuasive writing. That’s a good thing.

Knowing where you stand on issues and knowing how to argue for or against something is a skill that will serve you well both inside and outside of the classroom.

Persuasion is the art of using logic to prompt audiences to change their mind or take action, and is generally seen as accomplishing that goal by appealing to emotions and feelings.

A persuasive essay is one that attempts to get a reader to agree with your perspective.

What is a persuasive essay?

Ready for some tips on how to produce a well-written, well-rounded, well-structured persuasive essay? Just say yes. I don’t want to have to write another essay to convince you!

How Do I Write a Persuasive Essay?

Your persuasive essay needs to have the three components required of any essay: the introduction, body, and conclusion.

That is essay structure. However, there is flexibility in that structure.

There is no rule (unless the assignment has specific rules) for how many paragraphs any of those sections need.

Although the components should be proportional; the body paragraphs will comprise most of your persuasive essay.

What should every essay include?

How Do I Start a Persuasive Essay?

As with any essay introduction, this paragraph is where you grab your audience’s attention, provide context for the topic of discussion, and present your thesis statement.

TIP 1: Some writers find it easier to write their introductions last. As long as you have your working thesis, this is a perfectly acceptable approach. From that thesis, you can plan your body paragraphs and then go back and write your introduction.

TIP 2: Avoid “announcing” your thesis. Don’t include statements like this:

  • “In my essay I will show why extinct animals should (not) be regenerated.”
  • “The purpose of my essay is to argue that extinct animals should (not) be regenerated.”

Announcements take away from the originality, authority, and sophistication of your writing.

Instead, write a convincing thesis statement that answers the question “so what?” Why is the topic important, what do you think about it, and why do you think that? Be specific.

How Many Paragraphs Should a Persuasive Essay Have?

This body of your persuasive essay is the section in which you develop the arguments that support your thesis. Consider these questions as you plan this section of your essay:

  • What arguments support your thesis?
  • What is the best order for your arguments?
  • What evidence do you have?
  • Will you address the opposing argument to your own?
  • How can you conclude convincingly?

The body of a persuasive essay

TIP: Brainstorm and do your research before you decide which arguments you’ll focus on in your discussion. Make a list of possibilities and go with the ones that are strongest, that you can discuss with the most confidence, and that help you balance your rhetorical triangle.

What Should I Put in the Conclusion of a Persuasive Essay?

The conclusion is your “mic-drop” moment. Think about how you can leave your audience with a strong final comment.

And while a conclusion often re-emphasizes the main points of a discussion, it shouldn’t simply repeat them.

TIP 1: Be careful not to introduce a new argument in the conclusion—there’s no time to develop it now that you’ve reached the end of your discussion!

TIP 2: As with your thesis, avoid announcing your conclusion. Don’t start your conclusion with “in conclusion” or “to conclude” or “to end my essay” type statements. Your audience should be able to see that you are bringing the discussion to a close without those overused, less sophisticated signals.

What Are Some Good Topics for a Persuasive Essay?

If your instructor has assigned you a topic, then you’ve already got your issue; you’ll just have to determine where you stand on the issue. Where you stand on your topic is your position on that topic.

Your position will ultimately become the thesis of your persuasive essay: the statement the rest of the essay argues for and supports, intending to convince your audience to consider your point of view.

If you have to choose your own topic, use these guidelines to help you make your selection:

  • Choose an issue you truly care about
  • Choose an issue that is actually debatable

Simple “tastes” (likes and dislikes) can’t really be argued. No matter how many ways someone tries to convince me that milk chocolate rules, I just won’t agree.

It’s dark chocolate or nothing as far as my tastes are concerned.

Similarly, you can’t convince a person to “like” one film more than another in an essay.

You could argue that one movie has superior qualities than another: cinematography, acting, directing, etc. but you can’t convince a person that the film really appeals to them.

Debatable and non-debatable concepts

Once you’ve selected your issue, determine your position just as you would for an assigned topic. That position will ultimately become your thesis.

Until you’ve finalized your work, consider your thesis a “working thesis.”

This means that your statement represents your position, but you might change its phrasing or structure for that final version.

How Do I Identify an Audience for My Persuasive Essay?

When you’re writing an essay for a class, it can seem strange to identify an audience—isn’t the audience the instructor?

Your instructor will read and evaluate your essay, and may be part of your greater audience, but you shouldn’t just write for your teacher.

Think about who your intended audience is.

For an argument essay, think of your audience as the people who disagree with you—the people who need convincing.

That population could be quite broad, for example, if you’re arguing a political issue, or narrow, if you’re trying to convince your parents to extend your curfew.

Once you’ve got a sense of your audience, it’s time to consult with Aristotle. Aristotle’s teaching on persuasion has shaped communication since about 330 BC. Apparently, it works.

How Do You Create an Effective Persuasive Essay?

Aristotle taught that in order to convince an audience of something, the communicator needs to balance the three elements of the rhetorical triangle to achieve the best results.

Those three elements are ethos, logos, and pathos.

Ethos relates to credibility and trustworthiness. How can you, as the writer, demonstrate your credibility as a source of information to your audience?

How will you show them you are worthy of their trust?

How to make your essay credible

  • You show you’ve done your research: you understand the issue, both sides
  • You show respect for the opposing side: if you disrespect your audience, they won’t respect you or your ideas

Logos relates to logic. How will you convince your audience that your arguments and ideas are reasonable?

How to use logic in essays

You provide facts or other supporting evidence to support your claims.

That evidence may take the form of studies or expert input or reasonable examples or a combination of all of those things, depending on the specific requirements of your assignment.

Remember: if you use someone else’s ideas or words in your essay, you need to give them credit.

ProWritingAid’s Plagiarism Checker checks your work against over a billion web-pages, published works, and academic papers so you can be sure of its originality.

Pathos relates to emotion. Audiences are people and people are emotional beings. We respond to emotional prompts. How will you engage your audience with your arguments on an emotional level?

How to use emotion in essays

  • You make strategic word choices: words have denotations (dictionary meanings) and also connotations, or emotional values. Use words whose connotations will help prompt the feelings you want your audience to experience.
  • You use emotionally engaging examples to support your claims or make a point, prompting your audience to be moved by your discussion.

Be mindful as you lean into elements of the triangle. Too much pathos and your audience might end up feeling manipulated, roll their eyes and move on.

An “all logos” approach will leave your essay dry and without a sense of voice; it will probably bore your audience rather than make them care.

How Should I Edit My Persuasive Essay?

Once you’ve got your essay planned, start writing! Don’t worry about perfection, just get your ideas out of your head and off your list and into a rough essay format.

After you’ve written your draft, evaluate your work. What works and what doesn’t? For help with evaluating and revising your work, check out this ProWritingAid post on manuscript revision.

After you’ve evaluated your draft, revise it. Repeat that process as many times as you need to make your work the best it can be.

When you’re satisfied with the content and structure of the essay, take it through the editing process.

Grammatical or sentence-level errors can distract your audience or even detract from the ethos—the authority—of your work.

You don’t have to edit alone! ProWritingAid’s Realtime Report will find errors and make suggestions for improvements.

How Can I Improve My Persuasion Skills?

You can develop your powers of persuasion every day just by observing what’s around you.

  • How is that advertisement working to convince you to buy a product?
  • How is a political candidate arguing for you to vote for them?
  • How do you “argue” with friends about what to do over the weekend, or convince your boss to give you a raise?
  • How are your parents working to convince you to follow a certain academic or career path?

As you observe these arguments in action, evaluate them. Why are they effective or why do they fail?

How could an argument be strengthened with more (or less) emphasis on ethos, logos, and pathos?

Every argument is an opportunity to learn! Observe them, evaluate them, and use them to perfect your own powers of persuasion.

150 Good Persuasive Essay Topics on Everything

Without having some good persuasive essay topics in your pocket, a student could not write a paper of this type. Read the article to get an understanding of what is a persuasive essay and get topic ideas on different subjects.

What is a Persuasive Essay?

A persuasive essay is a common type of writing task assigned to students in school, college, and university throughout the course of their education.
According to the definition, a persuasive (also referred to as argumentative) essay is a type of academic paper that implies using valid facts, clear logic, and reasoning to convince readers of the validity of an author’s viewpoint.

Why do you need to master this type of writing? From an academic perspective, mastering the art of persuasive writing is vital to be able to handle such tasks at school or college and maintain good performance. At the same time, this skill also has real-life value. Thus, learning how to write a persuasive essay teaches students how to develop their own viewpoints on a given subject matter and how to use arguments to prove its correctness. This type of writing also helps in acquiring vital life skills such as critical thinking, reasoning, logic, and persuasion.

How to Write a Persuasive Essay?

Here are some key persuasive writing prompts to keep in mind while working on such tasks:

  • Choose an engaging topic. Choosing a relevant, manageable, and interesting topic can be hard, but it is one of the most vital steps in making your essay successful or unsuccessful (if it is not engaging).
  • Take a clear position on a given topic. Writing a persuasive essay requires choosing a specific side you are going to advocate for in your paper.
  • Know your audience. Since the main purpose of this form of writing is to persuade readers, it is vital to know the audience you are writing for and understand their perspective—to create an effective paper.
  • Do thorough research to identify the arguments you can use in your essay. Then, prioritize arguments according to their validity and value.
  • Use the most convincing and logical evidence.
  • Make it engaging. Use a catchy hook in the introduction to grab your readers’ attention, and try your best to keep them interested through the whole piece.
  • Keep it clear and straight to the point.

Difference Between a Persuasive Speech and a Persuasive Essay

Another common form of persuasive writing is persuasive speech. This form of writing can also be assigned within an academic course. However, it is also widely used in the professional world, for example, when presenting a new idea to investors with the goal of persuading them to invest their money in a project.

Is writing a persuasive speech any different from writing an essay? To begin with, writing an essay and a speech are two completely different experiences. Even though the ultimate goal is the same, to convince the audience of something, the steps of writing, style, tone of voice, and techniques used by the author can be quite different.

Here are the key differences between a persuasive speech and a persuasive essay:

  • Audience. Obviously, by writing a speech you intend to communicate with a live audience, meanwhile, an essay addresses a reading audience.
  • Tone. Due to the difference in audience, the tone of these two persuasive pieces is also different. A speech aims to generate a strong emotional effect. To create it, authors often use a particular diction full of grave, hopeful, or uplifting tones. An essay also relies on evoking emotions; however, in this case, a writer will fulfill this goal with the help of making the right points.
  • Format. Most essays follow a standard format: introduction, body, and conclusion. A speech also generally follows the same structure. However, often speechwriters draw a separate conclusion from every point made in the body to ensure that the audience is on the same page with the speaker.
  • Presentation. A speech gives a speaker a wider range of tools to use during a presentation. Thus, when writing a speech, you can expect a speaker to further strengthen its effect with the help of eye contact, body language, intonation, gestures, etc. On the contrary, when writing an essay, the whole effect a piece makes depends on the word choice and the way you use them.

Components of a Persuasive Essay

Here we have compelled an extensive list of good persuasive essay topics divided into popular categories to help you get started with your paper.
A persuasive essay should be well-organized and follow a clear and logical structure. As a rule, the length of this essay is between 5-6 paragraphs. What are the components of a persuasive essay? This type of work follows the standard essay structure – that is, a catchy intro; the main body which includes the main ideas, with arguments to support them; and a logical conclusion. Now, let’s look at each of the three components closer:

  • Introduction: An introduction is the opening paragraph of an essay. It is the first thing that gets presented to readers’ eyes, which is why it has to be clear and attention-grabbing. To drive readers’ attention, an introduction should contain a hook – an intriguing fact, statement, or argument. Also, an introductory paragraph has to contain a strong thesis statement that reflects the main idea that you will be examining in the next part.
  • Body: An essay’s main body is its heart. As a rule, it consists of 3-4 paragraphs. Each paragraph reflects a specific point and provides supporting evidence for it.
  • Conclusion: The closing part of your essay is used to sum up the key ideas discussed in its main body and connects them to the thesis statement in the introduction. In persuasive writing, the conclusion is used to strengthen the persuasive effect of the whole piece.

Persuasive Essay Topics

So, you were assigned to write a persuasive essay, where should you start? The first step in preparation for writing is the choice of a topic. A lot depends on this step. If you manage to pick a good topic, the writing process will be much simpler and you will also have higher chances to get a really good grade. At the same time, if a topic is not relevant or engaging enough, it can ruin everything.

Although having freedom of choice is seemingly a good thing, many students feel rather confused about which persuasive topics are good ones. If you are wondering how to pick a good subject, here are the main criteria that define good persuasive topics:

  • The topic is engaging. A great topic should not only be interesting for your audience, but for you as well. If you find something you are interested in, the writing process will become more pleasant and less stressful to research.
  • You have an opinion about it. In order to persuade readers of something, you need to define your position first. Thus, it is vital to pick a persuasive topic you have an opinion about.
  • It is controversial. Obviously there should be two sides of the argument in order to have something to convince your audience about. Thus, you need to pick a topic you can examine both sides of.
  • The topic is manageable. Finally, a perfect persuasive topic is one for which there are enough arguments to provide. Therefore, before you stop on a specific topic, be sure to conduct enough research to see if you can find sufficient supporting evidence for your ideas.
