While some people think that every person should also be responsible in looking after the universe. This essay discusses both sides of this argument and then I will give my own perspective. Taking the US as an example, when the government banned any one to get rid of any debris at the beach this resulted in cleaning the environment as well as reducing the pollution. On the other hand, every person plays an essential role in taking care of the atmosphere. This because when an individual feels that he holds the full responsibility to keep the area where he lives in clean. Moreover, he will be counted for his behavior if he breached the rule. In this case a lot of pollution problems will be diminished. To illustrate, according to the survey that has been conducted through the government in Turkey which states that every individual is enforced to contribute in a volunteer action also should propose a viable solution to decrease the impact of greenhouse gases. In conclusion, although the government bare the complete responsibility in decreasing environmental problems. Why You Should Use Screenwriting Techniques to Write Your College Essay

Why You Should Use Screenwriting Techniques to Write Your College Essay

Maybe you have a lot of ideas about what should go into your personal statement, but you’re not sure how to organize them all into an awesome essay.

One way is to use what we call Narrative structure—an approach that contains in roughly equal parts a challenge you faced, what you did about it, and what you learned. A slightly more complex form of Narrative structure just so happens to be the structure most screenplays use.

Screenwriting guru Robert McKee once wrote that “the mark of a master is to select only a few moments, but give us a lifetime.”

This ability is also the mark of a master college essay writer! Your job when writing the personal statement (and supplemental essays) is to show the reader who you are and what matters to you.

You do that by writing meaningful scenes from your life, with descriptive and sensory details, perhaps dialogue, and at least one memorable character (you). But the similarities don’t end there: There are many strategies screenwriters use to write great movies that you can use to write a great essay.

Starting the essay Screenwriting-Style

Not sure how to start your essay? That guide offers a bunch of effective ways.

Here’s one more: a line of dialogue can be very effective at hooking the reader in — especially if your dialogue is filled with subtext that raises questions in the reader’s mind (like our friend Robert McKee above).

William Goldman, who wrote many Oscar-nominated screenplays, was a master of writing great dialogue filled with subtext. In Goldman’s view, subtext is “the unexpressed, subconscious life that brings size and weight to your writing.” Another way of saying it is subtext is what you read between the lines.

Here’s an example: In the opening scene of Goldman’s classic 1970’s film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Butch, a bank robber, is checking out a bank he wants to rob. He looks unhappy as he checks out the thick metal doors and heavily barred windows. He asks the security guard, “What was the matter with that old bank? It was beautiful.” The guard answers, “it kept getting robbed.” Butch replies, partly to himself: “Small price to pay for beauty.” This opening exchange is filled with subtext that tells us a lot about Butch and what he’s up to—it points to the fact that we’re about to watch a movie about a pair of bank robbers, but also raises questions in our minds (An old west bank robber concerned with beauty and aesthetics? Who is this guy? Doesn’t seem like the story I was expecting…).

The bottom line is, if you want to start off with a line of dialogue in your college essay, make sure that it has subtext.

How do you do this? Try to write dialogue that feels like it means more than just what’s on the page. Here’s an example from a collection of outstanding college essays:

“Chris, what would you like to have for Christmas Dinner?

Suddenly, a miniature gathering of the European Commission glares straight at me. I feel the pressure of picking one option over the other.

What do I choose? The Roast Duck of Denmark, the Five Fish of Italy, the Turkey of Great Britain, or the Ham of the U.S.? Like the various nations of the European Union, the individual proponents of these culinary varieties are lobbying their interests to me, a miniature Jean-Claude Junker.

Now, you may be asking yourselves: why would I be so pensive over a meal choice? See, I have been blessed to be a part of what my mother calls the “melting pot of Europe.”

In this college essay, the opening line of dialogue, in conjunction with the line that follows, raises the question in our minds of why Chris is being asked what he wants for Christmas dinner.

The answer? As it turns out, this is an “identity” essay, in which the writer is sharing information about his multitude of ethnic identities, so he uses the example of Christmas dinner as a way to hook us into the problems he sometimes experiences as a multi-ethnic individual.

Joseph Campbell wrote The Hero’s Journey many years ago as a tool to help others think about the structure and organization of stories, and screenwriters have been using Campbell’s formula to structure exciting, captivating films for decades. (Think STAR WARS.)

The most basic form of the Hero’s Journey has five steps you can follow in your essay:

Status Quo—Show us what your life was like before “it” (“it” being some big challenge/event that changes your life) happened

Inciting incident/Status Quo Change—Tell us what “it” was that happened

Raise the Stakes—Different obstacles you had to overcome in working through the challenge. Actions (that were probably harder than you thought they would be) that you took to overcome those obstacles that required growth and change.

Moment of Truth—A time that requires you to use what you’ve learned over the course of the story to face an ultimate test or decision. Did you win the prize? Solve the problem? Uncover the truth?

Outcome/New Status quo—How are you different from who you were at the beginning of the story? What did you learn? What will you do differently as a result in the future?

One of our favorite example essays, What Had to Be Done, illustrates aspects of this structural approach. You can read the whole essay at that link, but here are those core structural components:

Status Quo: Abusive father; family trauma; poverty

Inciting incident/Status Quo Change: Father arrested + alcoholic step-father

Raise the Stakes: Brother Fernando born, had to help care for him; undocumented status; became my own teacher; found a job to help pay bills; raised my grades; music + swimming; pioneered AP Physic 2 course

Moment of Truth: President of California Scholarship Federation; tutored kids, teens, adults; counseled friends facing similar circumstances

Outcome/New Status quo: Have grown, changed, done tons, and am proud. But still more to do and explore. Not because I have to, but because I choose to.

To outline your narrative essay, one trick you can use is to try writing a sentence (or for the Raise the Stakes section, probably a few sentences) that corresponds to those five components of the basic Hero’s Journey. For example, here’s how the first sentences of What Had to Be Done map onto Campbell’s structure:

Status Quo:At six years old, I stood locked away in the restroom.”

Inciting Incident/Status Quo Change:Living without a father meant money was tight, mom worked two jobs, and my brother and I took care of each other when she worked.”

Raise the Stakes: “As undocumented immigrants and with little to no family around us, we had to rely on each other. + Over time, however, I grew determined to improve the quality of life for my family and myself. + Without a father figure to teach me the things a father could, I became my own teacher. + I also worked to apply myself constructively in other ways.”

Moment of Truth:These changes inspired me to help others.”

New Status Quo:But I’m excited to say that there’s so much I have yet to do. + I’ll do as much as I can from now on.”

Can you see how it follows the basic formula of The Hero’s Journey?

Writing the Essay: Making Connections

Once you’ve figured out a basic outline for your essay, and have an idea of how to start it, dive in with a draft. Once you do, you’ll probably need to write some smooth, effective transitions between your sentences and paragraphs.

The job of transitions is to connect one paragraph to the next, and one idea to the next. They help tie the essay together and create flow.

In a screenplay, a transitional moment doesn’t just connect one scene to the next—it also has to move the story forward from one level of conflict to the next (like many of the sentences in the Raise the Stakes section of What Had to Be Done do). This is most often done through showing cause and effect between the two scenes, or through some kind of compare/contrast between scenes.

If you’re having trouble writing transitions, think about either showing cause and effect between two paragraphs, or using compare/contrast language to show the similarity or difference between the two paragraphs.

Here’s an example from SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME. When Peter’s identity is revealed in the beginning of the movie, he is hiding out in Aunt May’s apartment and is soon surrounded by helicopters and emergency vehicles and throngs of people calling out his name. Peter sighs, slumps over and pulls up the blinds to reveal the insanity outside. Peter turns to his friends and family and shrugs, “I mean, maybe it’s not such a big deal?”

And then we cut to the next scene, which shows just how big of a deal it actually is. This hint of contrast glues the two scenes together and makes the transition to the next scene smooth. It also moves the story forward from Peter’s “status quo” into the high-stakes action that follows in the rest of the movie.

Here’s a college essay transition that does something similar. The writer takes us from one frame of mind to a completely different one, and she does it smoothly.

Growing up, my world was basketball. My summers were spent between the two solid black lines. My skin was consistently tan in splotches and ridden with random scratches. My wardrobe consisted mainly of track shorts, Nike shoes, and tournament t-shirts. Gatorade and Fun Dip were my pre-game snacks. The cacophony of rowdy crowds, ref whistles, squeaky shoes, and scoreboard buzzers was a familiar sound. I was the team captain of almost every team I played on—familiar with the Xs and Os of plays, commander of the court, and the coach’s right hand girl.

But that was only me on the surface.

Deep down I was an East-Asian influenced bibliophile and a Young Adult fiction writer.

The shift from her introductory paragraph to the rest of the essay uses a contrast between her two sides (athlete and bibliophile) to create flow and move the essay’s story forward.

You can find an in-depth post on writing transition sentences here, and if you’d like to read the whole essay about the basketball-playing bibliophile, you can find that here.

Value changes

Another thing screenwriting expert Robert McKee teaches is that in a scene, there should be a “value change” from either positive to negative or negative to positive, in order to make the scene engaging. Here at College Essay Guy, we talk a lot about identifying your values and how doing so can help you write a stand-out essay.

For instance, if you strongly value family, and yours has been broken in some way, in your essay you might show how you learned to adapt to the changed circumstances and still have those close family ties that mean so much to you.

McKee stresses that it’s the presence of antagonistic forces in the story that make these value changes come alive. Antagonistic forces are everywhere—death, divorce, deportation, illness of all kinds, and of course, other people who are… antagonistic and try to get in the way of our hopes and dreams.

In the series STRANGER THINGS, for example, the main driving value is family. The crazy events and supernatural creatures are intriguing and exciting, but it’s Will’s mother’s determination to find him, and her certainty that he is alive, that drives the story and keeps us coming back to the couch to watch it. And the antagonistic forces of the lab put so much pressure on that value of family throughout the seasons that, as a society, we are totally hooked.

Many great college essays have explored the values of family relationships and the pressures that can be placed upon them. In ”Grandma’s Kimchi”, a student writes about his grandmother’s weekly preparation of kimchi and how, even after his grandmother developed Alzheimer’s and no longer remembered him, their connection lives on through the sensory details of the classic Korean dish. Toward the end of the essay, he writes:

Seeing grandma again this summer, that moment of clarity seemed ephemeral. Her disheveled hair and expressionless face told of the aggressive development of her illness.

But holding her hands, looking into her eyes, I could still smell that garlic. The moments of Saturday mornings remain ingrained in my mind. Grandma was an artist who painted the cabbages with strokes of red pepper.

These two short paragraphs are obviously filled with opposing values—the idea of death and disease in the first and life and vitality in the second. And I’m sure you’ll agree that the effect is very moving.

Writing a Surprising and inevitable ending

Stuck on how to end your essay? Aristotle wrote The Poetics centuries ago, but it contains writing guidance that still rings true today. His advice? The strongest endings feel both surprising, and inevitable.

An example that comes to mind happens to also be from SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (Okay, yes, I’m a little obsessed with the movie.) One reason? The movie has an ending that feels both surprising and inevitable (spoilers incoming).

This is when Peter goes to reintroduce himself to MJ and Ned at the coffee shop, but at the end of the scene, he decides not to. Obviously this is surprising, but how is it also inevitable? Because 1) By this time, we know how important it is that MJ and Ned follow through on those acceptance letters to MIT they just opened, and 2) It’s also pretty clear by now that revealing Peter’s identity almost never ends well. We’re a bit surprised that things end this way, and yet we know they have to end this way.

How do you do this in a college essay? Sometimes it just happens organically as you write, but more often than not, it takes some thought. In the essay above, the student decides that instead of staying focused on his grandmother’s Kim Chi, he will draw a comparison between her artful creation of the dish and his own attempts to write about her artfully.

Turning the essay in a different direction, especially if that direction points towards your aspirations, your future and your goals, can feel surprising if it’s done well, and it can give the reader that “twist” that is so satisfying at the end of all stories.

Revise, Revise, Revise

Finally, we know it often takes many drafts before a college essay becomes not just good, but great. Screenwriting guru Linda Seger wrote the bestselling book Making a Good Script Great, and one of her biggest tips is that nothing is ever finished until you’ve written at least ten drafts. As she says in her book, “It depends not only on the writing, but also on the revision for a good script to become a great one.”

Or as Stephen King puts it: “To write is human, to edit is divine.”

Ten drafts probably seems like a lot. And hey, you could totally write a strong essay in fewer. But just for some framing, the screenplay for the 2019 film UNCUT GEMS, which won multiple awards, went through a total of 160 drafts!

Don’t panic. You won’t need nearly that many. But compared with 160, maybe 5-10 isn’t so bad?

Want more tips on revising your college essay? Check out this blog post. And remember, as Ernest Hemingway himself once said, “writing is rewriting.”

Now that you’re an expert on how to use screenplay techniques to make your essay really stand out to colleges, you’re ready to draft an acceptance letter-winning essay of your own.

The 12 Dos and Don’ts of Writing a Blog

Writing a blog can be fun, but if you don’t know the dos and don’ts of how to write a blog, you’ll never attract a bigger audience. Here are 12 essential tips.

Thinking about writing a blog? Been writing a blog for some time now and have yet to establish any growth (and by “growth” I mean “increased pageviews”)? Over the past 10 years I’ve refined my blogging skills—that’s right, I started my first blog back in 2001 and it is so embarrassing by today’s standards that I’m almost unwilling to link to it … almost. Blogs for writers are everywhere, and there’s often good advice on them about writing a blog. There’s also plenty of not-so-good advice. It can be frustrating.

Image placeholder title

Now I currently run several successful blogs, including The Life of Dad and this online editor blog. It’s been a challenge juggling them but, by sticking to these 12 specific dos and don’ts of writing a blog that I’ve developed over my years of experience, I’ve been able to establish growth (increased pageviews). I hope they can help you learn how to write a good blog too.

When Writing a Blog Do …

Find your focus.

To do this, you must first ask yourself this question: Who are your target readers? Once that’s settled, you can home in on a niche category (like this one focuses on writing) and be the expert on it.

Be relatable, be yourself.

What sets bloggers apart from newspaper article feeds is voice. Let your readers get to know you. Your content is what draws them in while your personality, or your voice in writing, is what will keep them there.

Use links within your posts.

Whether you are linking to other blogs or websites that contain great information or linking to past posts on your own site, do it whenever you can. This will help not only increase your clicks but also help with your blog’s search engine rankings.

Include images.

While readers come to your blog for information and personality, they also need to be stimulated visually. Not all posts will lend themselves to an image, but when they do, take advantage of it. Here’s some advice on finding free online images that you can use.

Respond to blog comments.

This is an opportunity to connect directly with the people who are reading your work. Not all comments need a response, but be sure to respond to ones that do. And sometimes it’s worth just popping on and posting “Thanks for reading my blog.”

Post to Facebook, Twitter, and Anywhere Else You Can.

Don’t be afraid to use social media to tout your posts. Anything that makes it easier for potential readers to find your blog is a must (and friends and family definitely qualify as potential readers).

When Writing a Blog Don’t …

Set Unrealistic Goals.

You know your schedule and abilities better than anyone else, so don’t attempt to post every day if you can’t. Start out by posting weekly and get in a groove. As you streamline your process, increase your posting if you can.

Limit your word count.

If you have something to say, say it. Readers (and search engines) prefer to get meatier pieces (500 words or more) to make clicking through worth their time. This doesn’t mean you can’t feature shorter pieces or that you should ramble on just to meet a word count, but don’t be afraid to break down antiquated perceptions that blogs need to be short. When the time is right, go long.

Make grammar mistakes.

And, if you do, correct them immediately. Folks on the Web tend to be more lenient about typos, so don’t stress about it if you do make a mistake. But correct it as soon as you can. Remember, if you ever want readers to take you seriously, you have to take yourself (and your blog) seriously. Give it the professional quality it deserves.

Be negative.

It’s generally unwise to air personal grievances publicly (unless, of course, that’s the theme of your blog). You’ll go a lot further by being positive, inspirational and supportive to the community that you’re writing to.

Write long paragraphs.

Long blocks of text are hard for readers to digest, especially when reading on computers and tablets. Break up your content into shorter paragraphs, bullet points and lists whenever possible. Also, if you can, work in some subheads.

Avoid trying new things.

It’s important to let your blog evolve over time, and the only way this can happen is if you take risks every once in awhile. Whether it’s adding infographs or personal stories or guest bloggers, never be afraid to try something new. If you feel it can add something special to your blog, try it.

How to Write Good Essay: Do’s and Don’ts in UPSC CSE Mains

This article outlines the key things that aspirants should keep in mind while writing the essay.

The essay paper is a significant component of the UPSC civil services examinations. It is capable to make or break your outcome. Before writing an essay in the UPSC Mains Exam, there are a few things to consider. People frequently make silly mistakes when writing essays for the IAS Mains Exam. This article will help the aspirants with essay writing for UPSC examination.

Before beginning any piece of work, we ensure that it has a basic framework in order to be effective and coherent. It is necessary to understand what should be included and what should be left out when writing for this purpose. The common do’s and don’ts of essay writing assist in writing in a comprehensive and structured manner. They serve as guidelines for improving the content’s relevance and impact. They aid in reducing the most common errors we make when writing essays.

This paper is divided into two portions. Each component contains four themes from which you must select one for each portion. Each essay is graded on a scale of 125 points, for a total of 250 points.

Writing allows you to see inside your mind. The reader will be able to tell how you think, debate, and support your point of view based on what you write on paper. As a result, essays are required for the majority of competitive exams and academic admission exams. Despite its importance, aspirants frequently fail to give essay papers the attention they deserve. First-timers believe they will write a brilliant essay in the final test, but experienced applicants believe that having prepared extensively for GS will be sufficient to create a strong essay on its own. This is a deadly error in judgement.

Candidates may be asked to produce essays on a variety of subjects. They will be expected to stick to the essay’s topic, organise their thoughts in a logical manner, and write concisely. Effective and precise expression will be rewarded. In GS, marks are only given on the basis of substance, whereas in essays, marks are only given on the basis of content. Examiners will pay close attention not only to the content of your essay, but also to the coherence, language, and organisation of your writing. As a result, you must take extra care to organise your thoughts and avoid common spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Table of Contents

What should you do and where should you start?

Your GS preparation will provide the majority of the content for your Essay. Aside from that, the following resources will be beneficial:

Nonfiction reading promotes the maturation of the mental process. In addition to communicating knowledge, they will enable you to come across good figures of speech, art of arguing, appealing rhetoric, and creative stuff, among other things. Develop the habit of reading non-fiction books in addition to UPSC-related material. It doesn’t mean you should start reading one nonfiction book every topic to improve your Essay scores; rather, reading them in your spare time will help you in the long run.

Referencing individual magazines: For specific topics, you can refer to various issues of Yojana/EPW/Economic Survey, etc. If you’re writing an essay on tribal issues or public health, for example, you can look through specific issues of these magazines to find the most up-to-date statistics (IMR, MMR, malnutrition levels, and so on) as well as information on the benefits and drawbacks of government programmes in those areas.

Gathering interesting stories, anecdotes, and quotes: Anecdotes, quotes, and true stories that you come across in newspapers and books and want to incorporate in your essay should be written down. Begin with a relevant anecdote or narrative with the essay topic as its underlying theme.

Language and expression improvement

The article should be written in simple, basic English with as little complexity as possible. If you’re going to use a complicated definitional concept like “Constitutionalism” or “Sanskritization,” define it first in a phrase. The examiner will also comprehend exactly what you’re trying to say. Clear writing equates to clear thinking. And it’s exactly what a reader is looking for.

Keep your sentences succinct and precise. Because of the long, twisted language, it’s difficult to read and understand. You get a bad sentence sprawl when you utilise conjunctions to add one clause after another.

Vocabulary

To create a good essay, it is not required to memorise complex words. Using a strong term or a witty phrase every now and then, on the other hand, will offer your content a competitive edge. Reading nonfiction and English newspapers is the simplest approach to expand your vocabulary. While reading them, if you come across a good turn of phrase or a word you don’t recognise, scribble it down in a book, look it up in a dictionary, and understand the context in which it was used. This helps with long-term memory. A dictionary app on your phone is also beneficial. It takes time to build a vast vocabulary, but with practise, anyone may enhance their ability to employ a wide range of words.

How to make a smooth transition from one paragraph to the next

1. Using a linking sentence at the conclusion of each paragraph:

You write a statement at the conclusion of each para to let the examiner know what’s coming next

2. Using a question:

Instead of a link sentence, you can add a question at the end of a paragraph to helplessly carry the examiner’s attention to the next.

3. Starting the next paragraph with a shift signal:

Simply insert a word or two at the beginning of each para to indicate a change in your subtopic.

Creating Main Content from the Topic

This is analogous to spinning a web from a thread. Depending on the topic, you can select the best option from the list below.

  • Temporal: the past, the present, and the future
  • Sectors include media, science and technology, business, sports, religion, politics, and administration, among others.
  • Individual, Family, Professional Workplace, Society, Community, National, and Global Problems and Solutions: Concept (historical evolution + status), benefits, problems, and solutions
  • Social, political, economic, administrative, international, environmental, historical, scientific, security/defence, and legal standards.
  • Original: An essay should be formed primarily by your understanding and perceptions, rather than entirely on borrowed opinions.
  • Exploration of relevant dimensions with causation, points-counterpoints, logical evaluation, inferences, and so on.
  • Effective communication: An essay should be distinguished by clarity and flow, with no “silt” of bulky information or difficult academic ideas. These factors disrupt the flow. Effective communication requires a simple style, small sentences, appropriate vocabulary, an emotional appeal, quotes, punch lines, and the right thrust at the right times, among other things.
  • Structure: Because an essay is a structured piece of writing, it must have a distinct introduction, main body (description), and conclusion.
  • Consistency and coherence- Consistency and coherence help to keep our arguments from becoming contradictory or conflicting.
  • Signposting- A predetermined trajectory, path, or direction denoted by the orderly placement of point numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, etc. It does not imply that each aspect should be numbered, but rather that all aspects should be in a way that the examiner can see the direction and order in your writing.
  • Focus and relevance: The writing in an essay should be concentrated and pertinent to the major issue and its aspects because it is thought in orbit.
  • Organic Connection: An essay should be distinguished by links between ideas in each paragraph. To be more specific, an essay should develop organically through childhood, adolescence, youth, maturity, and old age. An essay does not consist of isolated points; they must be related to the context and perspectives of the given topic.
  • Quote placement: Using the right quotes in the right places adds punch, thrust, and value.
  • Critical Thinking: The hallmarks of an essay are critical thinking, insight, understanding, consistency, and coherence.

DONT’S

  • Stay away from political and ideological biases: Neutrality and the absence of prejudice and bias are important indicators of rationality. Only facts, real-life observations, and established wisdom should guide you to a logical evolution and conclusion; political or ideological affiliations should have no bearing on your writing.
  • Avoid giving a long background; instead, get to the topic as soon as possible.
  • Avoid grammatical errors: As much as possible, avoid grammatical and syntax errors.
  • Keep your emotions in check. Control: Avoid being swayed by emotions; instead, try to stay anchored in logic, rationality, and wisdom.
  • Avoid being unbalanced and biased: A balanced and rational approach is the best approach in intellectual endeavour. Without a doubt, an essay should be analytical, draw inferences, and make value judgments, but it should also be emotionally balanced (anger, vengeance, retribution, abuse, naming and shaming should be avoided) and politically neutral (obsession, fetish, bias, prejudice, contempt, outlandish views right or left should be avoided)
  • Avoid using exclamatory words: Ornamental words may be appropriate in some situations, but the beauty of communication lies in its simplicity.
  • Content and references that are irrelevant should be avoided: It is best to avoid dragging irrelevant ideas that aren’t related to the topic, major idea, or theme.
  • Stick to the context: In the name of unconventional thought, avoid straying too far from the theme. Avoid arrogance and self-righteousness: in other words, respect ideas that are different from yours but nonetheless relevant. You can criticise a competitor’s idea, but you can’t put it down.
  • Starting paragraphs with borrowed opinions or quotes is not a good idea: Avoid relying on quotations to build or ride each paragraph. It’s permissible to use a citation at the start of the introduction and at the end of the conclusion, or wherever you think it’ll be most effective. However, don’t overdo it. You can cite statements and quotes within a paragraph to support your argument if you create a hypothesis and assess it rationally, but you should avoid starting paragraphs with borrowed ideas or quotes.

To manage time while taking the Mains exam, you must understand how to dedicate the appropriate amount of time to each question so that you may complete all of the questions in the allotted period of three hours. In this instance, the three rules of thumb for time management are:

  1. go with the flow while writing and thinking; learn to trust yourself; and avoid self-doubt, such as being unable to decide whether or not to write something.
  2. do not become trapped with one question – temporarily abandon the question that you are unable to write at a given time and move on to the next question;
  3. come back to the tough question as and when you have the opportunity to do so. You should be able to master the time management aspects of the Mains examination with enough practise.
  4. Stick to the word limit; improve your writing speed; try to use as little personal time as possible – in the exam hall, drinking water, going to the bathroom, changing pens, imagining how others are doing, and so on all qualify as personal time; and finally, do not try to achieve ‘perfection’ with your answers – the Mains examination is not the right platform for such things – instead, try to consistently maintain above average quality in all of your answers. It’s important to be consistent than to write an outstanding answer and then follow it up with a poor response.

How to conclude an essay

The conclusion should be upbeat and optimistic. You must summarise the entire essay in 3-4 sentences before writing your future vision. You can find some useful terms in PM Modi’s speeches. Sabka saath sabka vikas, Reform-Perform-Transform, Building A New India, and other phrases can be useful. To conclude your essay, use rhetoric, lofty expressions, constitutional ideals, Sanskrit slokas, and quotes. However, if you mentioned a fictitious character in your introduction, it’s always a good idea to end your write-up with a reference to that character. It gives the essay a sense of completion.

If you make it a practise to read superb UPSC essays on a regular basis, you’ll be able to write excellent essays. As part of your UPSC civil service preparation, incorporate reading essays. It’s also worth noting that consulting prior year UPSC essay papers can be really beneficial. Practice makes perfect, as they say.

Why should you choose a Teacher’s Career?

“One good teacher in a lifetime may sometimes change a delinquent into a solid citizen” – Philip Wylie

Teachers are an important part of a student’s life. They are the source of parting knowledge and wisdom. Every student has one favorite teacher, who has been the source of inspiration in his/ her life. Being a teacher can sometimes be a tough task but, it is always an enjoyable one too. It is a career that helps you grow in knowledge and as a person. Where else will you find such a combination? The answer is nowhere. A teacher’s career can open up an ocean of opportunities. Below listed are some reasons that can make you choose teaching as your career option. The reasons are as follows:

1. Make a difference

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” – Brad Henry

The teaching profession gives you the opportunity to work with young minds and make a difference in their lives. A teacher molds and influences the life of a student. By getting to know the students on a personal level, you get to work on their strengths. Every student is not the same but every student has potential to do one or the other thing. Teachers are the ones who help a student, become a respectable citizen of the human community. They have the responsibility of shaping the future of a country as students, are the future. Young minds have no boundaries and they look forward to a world filled with prospects, as teachers you can help them achieve their goals by guiding them.

2. Meet new people

Teaching is the platform where you get to meet new people. You get a chance to know young minds that will create new technologies and social structures in future. It is a profession that offers you various perks. You will not have the chance to meet as many people as you are going to meet when you become a teacher. People look up to you and respect you and your profession. You get to grow not only as a teacher but, as a person too.

3. Learn your subject better

By teaching, you can learn any topic in a better way. Teachers get to learn and understand their subject through various lenses. You get to explore the subject and discover the undiscovered zones. You get to fall in love with your subject and learning that never ends. Since students ask a number of questions, the teachers have to be prepared for any question that is thrown by the students. The desire to master the subject and dig deeper makes you, knowledgeable on the subject. The curious minds push you to your limits and you keep becoming better each day.

4. Develop leadership skills

You have to be a good leader in order to lead your students. The teaching profession helps you to develop your leadership skills. You need to become the authoritative voice so that the students know your authority as a teacher. You learn to become assertive and firm when you are needed. The instructor has to keep making sure that the chosen method, is in line and appropriate with the characteristics of the learner. They also consider the learning outcome that the method will bring. Thus while choosing a method; the instructor must keep in mind the subject matter and the learning capability of students. These days the education system encourages students to explore their creativity and think out of the box. There is a constant thirst that the students have to do something different. This kind of approach not only helps them to grow academically but also enhances their attitude. With the changing generation, teachers have to find out new ways and means to impart education. They have to ensure that the methods are effective and interesting at the same time. In order to do so, there are certain strategies that the teacher/ instructor use. The methods/strategies are as follows:

1. Lecture Method

The term “lecture” refers to an oral presentation of information by an instructor. This is a method that is widely used in all educational institutions. It primarily involves parting theoretical knowledge about a particular topic which includes an explanation, description, building relations, and comparing various elements in a topic. This method is teacher-centric, wherein a teacher takes the charge of providing information and knowledge to the students. The learners/ students depend on the teacher for learning. One cannot deliver a lecture without preparation. In order to prepare for a lecture the teacher needs to do some homework on the topic, she/ he will be taking in class. This method of teaching is very flexible and adaptable.

2. Discussion Method

This type of teaching style is not like the lecture method. It involves a two-way communication that takes place, between students and a teacher. Here, the main participants are the students who come forth with their opinions and ideas about a topic. In this process of discussion, the teacher listens and observes the involvement of students. It involves engaging students with a topic and starting a discussion. So, a teacher selects a topic and asks the class to discuss it. The students, in turn, bring out various aspects, cons, and pros of the topic. The teacher here tries to relate the topic to the real life, in order to give a clearer picture to the students. Conduction a discussion involves some preparation. The question that arises here is: how should the teacher prepare to conduct a discussion? The answer is simple. The teacher has to give the students a topic of discussion, wherein the students can contribute their thoughts. The teacher, in turn, has to bring in a relationship between the topic and its application in real life. The next step is to take the feedback from the students, which will help the teacher to know how much did the students understand. Taking a feedback is an important part of the discussion in order to ensure that the activity fulfilled a purpose.

This type of teaching method builds interest of students as it does not involve only listening. It also helps the students to accept and commit to a topic, enhancing the knowledge alongside. This style of teaching is preferred by most teachers in order to encourage and motivate the students to dig and research more on a topic.

In order to teach with this method the teacher, needs to prepare lessons in advance. Since there is a demonstration of an activity or an experiment involved, the teacher has to make sure that the aim of learning remains constant. The students should not divert from learning on a topic. This type of method is mostly used for science and technological subjects, wherein the students have to conduct experiments, in order to understand a phenomenon. For example, if the teacher wants to demonstrate bad effects of drinking, she/ he can present a video or a documentary. Or the teacher can organize a short play to convey the message. The students will understand the concept instantly by the method of displaying certain experiments or things.

4. Buzz Group Method

Meanwhile, the teacher observes and listens, to what the students have to contribute. Most students get to express their ideas/ viewpoint on a topic. This type of method also breaks the monotony of the lecture. The teachers can motivate students to think critically by conducting discussion sessions like these. Buzz group method is different from discussion method of teaching, where the discussion takes place between the teacher and students. In buzz group, the discussion happens between the students. For this method, the teachers need not do much, as the students are the main participants. The teachers have to only select a topic for the discussion.

5. Study Assignment Method

Under this method, the teacher assigns, work like reading books, research paper, coursework, and so on. Most students do not like homework/coursework, what they fail to understand, is that it promotes better understanding. Teachers usually give handouts, reading materials to help the students understand the topic better. Once the students read the material and come to class, the teacher can have a fruitful discussion. The students will be able to know their doubts and clear them there. This type of teaching method requires preparation in terms of distributing the reading material.
